Astronaut Love
Sep. 23rd, 2011 02:00 amI'm reading Rocket Men: The Epic Story Of The First Men On The Moon, and dear lord why hasn't anybody written Apollo 11 RPS? I mean, Rule 36, right? And how can people pass up gems like this:
Forehead, eh? I want to read a Buzz/Mike fic where Buzz is closeted and self-loathing (since he's devoutly Presbyterian), but he just can't resist MIke, who is just adorable. And then Neil is secretly in love with Buzz, but being his taciturn self, would never say anything, but that's why he's so brusque with Mike. I've check delicious and AO3, and google brings up nothing. :( Er, are my slash goggles on too tightly?
Anyway, after reading the detailed account, watching this was just chilling...in a good way, of course!
Excerpt taken from the aforementioned book, by Craig Nelson. Pages 297-297, in case anyone's wondering.
...Collins "grabbed Buzz by both ears and I was gonna kiss him on the forehead, I can remember that, and I got him to right about here and I said 'Eh, this is not a good thing to do somehow,' and I forgot, I clapped him on the back or shook his hand or something."...

Guess what they're making a movie of....
Jul. 20th, 2011 08:18 pmJOHN CARTER OF MARS!
I discovered this while watching the previews before Harry Potter. I literally JUST finished reading the first three books, it was the last thing I've finished (I'm in the middle of Rocket Men right now). My ears pricked up when a stodgy voice said, "Your uncle's passing came as a shock to all of us",, and then the instant he landed on the dry yellow plain, I started hyperventilating. I was shaking with excitement. Do you ever have those moments when something so serendipitous happens, you think, "I might be crazy, but does the universe revolve around me?" Because-- this book was written in 1912, I only know about it through a character in Bruce Coville's "Aliens Ate My Homework" series mentioning it, I found it by chance at Barnes and Noble a few years ago, and I finally got around to reading it right before the trailer came out. Yes, I know, now that I think about it, it makes sense that they would reissue the first few books if they'd just signed on for a movie deal, but at the time I was too excited to use logic like that.
The story itself, is, well, its a very very early sci-fi epic, which means it reads sort of like a romantic western adventure, which isn't everyone's cup of tea, and of course the female characters, while being interesting and spirited, only show signs of life in regards to the men they love, which admittedly got on my nerves after a while, even if I took the era into consideration, and John is quite the Gary Sue: but despite all these complaints, I love this book. I'd recommend it to anyone who wasn't utterly turned off by all the previous faults.
In any case, the movie should be visually delightful:
The new movie trailer. I love how fitting the song is to John Carter. I'm not sure how far into the story they're going to go, but it's perfect for the time he spends back on Earth , and if I were making a fanmix for him, that would be the first song I'd include.

John Carter, his love Dejah Thoris (she's actually far more clothed than her description in the book) beset by the various peoples and creatures of Barsoom

Ron Paul defends WikiLeaks to Congress
This joins the annals of public figures I don't like doing thing I do like, along with Sarah Palin and Shepard Smith.

Oh, it's the motherload of reviews
Sep. 28th, 2010 10:33 amHoly cow. I've been MIA for a while, due to various things like actually having friends around, and working again, and being a big lazy hot mess, but I think I'm getting a handle on things again. So, without further ado, here's what promises to be a behemoth of book "reviews":
( 16 mini-reviews, this way )
I think that about does it. For upcoming entries, I'm about 2/3 through The History Of White People, which is a fascinating look at the evolution of the concept of race and the effects it had on history, I've got The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms out of the library, and I thought The Known World would continue the theme of race and oppression nicely. Also, waiting to be picked up at the library are Lies My Teacher Told Me and A Supposedly Fun Thing I''ll Never Do Again.

Saving Wildlife my ass
Jun. 9th, 2010 05:10 pmSorry to spam a little, but I'm kinda pissed.
Because! Because you know those terribly sad Dawn dishsoap commercial, where they show a montage of pitiful animals coated in oil get cleaned up? And they talk about how buying their dishsoap helps clean up animals affected by oil spills?
Yeah, well we have one of those dispensers, and guess what the fine print says? Up to $500,000. I mean, I'm not an expert, either on vast amounts of money like that or costs of cleaning animals or cost of commercials, but I have a strong feeling that Dawn spent waaaaaay more than a million on ads and sell waaaay more than half a million bottles of soap. I know giving away an indeterminate amount of money is not a good business model, and I guess I should laud them for at least doing something, but that kind of stinginess just really pisses me off.

Forensic! Anthropology!
Jun. 9th, 2010 12:34 amEvery time I marathon Bones I get this terrible urge to study to be a forensic anthropologist. And yeah, I've read Gunshy(link), the SPNRPS J2 forensic anthropology AU fic by setissma so I'm at least aware that Bones is a terrible representation of what forensic anthropologist actually do, but the urge still gets me. Perhaps I won't be taken by these whims once I'm actually studying a particular subject. This is why I have my fingers crossed that they'll let me back at ND this fall. One of these days I'll drag myself to a lecture at a local colleges which happens to have something like 3 (3!) forensic anthropologists on its staff. In the meantime I guess I'll have to stick to bad TV adaptions and porny RPS fic.
Okay, now I want to watch Glee even more and get into the RPS fandom, because I caught the tail end of the interview Chris Colfer(?) did on Jimmy Fallon tonight, and in about three minutes he revealed that "New Directions" sounds like "Nude Erections" and accidentally spoiled a (teeny) part of the finale. And apparently before I tuned in, he broke something? Maybe I'll do like I did before I got into Supernatural and troll delicious for the best Glee/RPS fic before I get to watching it.
Pimping out the Angel!cest Kink Meme over at Crysta Martin's LJ and strongly encouraging everyone to go answer prompts over at the Gabriel Kink Meme. Two lovely people answer my prompts for Team Free Will foursome and post 5x19 with scorchin' hot fic (yeah, I know I'm kind of defeating the point of anonymity, hush!) and there are tons of amazing fills, but we could always do with more.
H/W and books
Apr. 20th, 2010 12:09 amI've started in on Sherlock Holmes fandom, thanks to the new movie. The most exasperating thing is that every time I see H/W I immediately say to myself "House/Wilson!" It's very distracting. I know that House and Wilson were inspired by Holmes and Watson, who are in fact the original H/W, but I haven't trained myself out of it yet.
In other news, I've managed to acquire a startling number of new books since my glut of on-sale books a short while ago. It's a good thing I've started getting my life in order, or I would be almost literally up to my eyeballs in books.
